IT WAS AN ALL WHITE AFFAIR, WITH LYFE JENNINGS
Toledo’s own Lyfe Jennings was back in Ohio on July 13th to host the All White Affair at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus. Now plants and flowers and trees and nature…that’s not really my thing, so I had never been to the conservatory before, but this trip was a no brainer. I have been a Lyfe Jennings fan for years…ever since I heard Stick Up Kid off of his debut album (Lyfe 268-192). I learned of the event on twitter from the Lyfe fan page www.twitter.com/TeamLyfe419 (shout out to TeamLyfe for always keeping us fans up to date). So, Friday July 13th was my lucky day. I had my white outfit and was ready to go.
This was the first “white party” I had ever been to, and this event was brought to us by Infinite Growth Entertainment (www.infinitegrowthent.com). The set up was very nice…I went in the main entrance and up the stairs to find a large room with large round tables lining each side with both tables and chairs covered in white. DJ Dru was set up at the front of the room with an Infinite Growth back drop to one side for pictures. In the back of the room was a bar area to the left, and then a table with vegetables, cheeses, fruits and a few other hors d’oeuvres to the right. A hallway led you out of the main room and down into a green house area, with plants, flowers and all types of greenery. Once you walked thru that area you had a choice of 2 outdoor patio areas…1 on either side. Each patio area was also decorated with white covered tables and chairs. One of the patio areas also had a live band playing; it was all very elegant. There were a few different photographers walking around offering to take your picture during the night, and in the green house area there was another back drop for anyone who wanted to pose for a picture there. As the party filled up it was a definite grown and sexy feel, but the crowd was pretty diverse. Most people had all white on, but of course there were those that wanted to throw a pop of color in there too…and there were a few that seemed to be out right rebelling at the idea LOL…but none the less, it was a good-looking crowd.
I spent the beginning of the night in the main room enjoying the variety of music DJ Dru was playing (I will definitely look to see where I can catch him working again). After some time, a drink and some food I walked back to the patio with the live band. They introduced themselves as The Unit Band from Cleveland (www.reverbnation.com/theunitband) …and they were exceptional. If you ever get the chance to check them out, I highly recommend them.
Now all that was left was to see Lyfe! While everything I saw for this event clearly stated that Lyfe Jennings was HOSTING this party, I couldn’t help but get a little excited at the idea that he might just surprise us with a tune or two. I mean, the instruments, sound system and mics are right there. But; while I was fully aware that any singing/performance from Lyfe would be a generous gift, other people seemed to believe they were owed a performance. I myself even told a few people that “he’s hosting and I do not expect him to sing”….and that was perfectly fine with me. He had been gone for several years and I was just happy he was home, making music and out and about again. I hope anyone that was there, and who may have had an unrealistic expectation of the night understands that just because a singer is going to be at the party doesn’t mean they are going to sing at the party. Shortly after the band completed there set and DJ Dru was being pumped back out in all areas, I heard the words I had been waiting for “LYFE JENNINGS IS IN THE BUILDING”. I remained calm…outwardly, but after a short stint sitting there like I was still enjoying the cool breeze I headed back inside and up the hallway to the main room. When I reached the top of the hallway, there he was in his white suit and blue shirt. There wasn’t a crush from the crowd but it was a steady stream of mostly women coming up to him and asking for pictures. I actually started to not approach him…he was clearly trying to come down the hallway and see the other areas in the party, but as he walked past I couldn’t let that moment slip away. Of course he was very nice and sweet as he took a picture with me (as he was with the many others there), and then he proceeded down the hall to the patio areas.
Back in the main room the crowd had definitely gotten loose and the dance floor was rocking. After a short time Lyfe returned to the main room and mingled with the crowd. At one point DJ Dru indicated that “ALL TOLEDO PEOPLE COME OVER HERE TO GET PICTURES” and I am pretty sure half the place got up…the Toledo love was heavy in there (of course). Before I knew it 1am had come around, the lights went up and we all began to make our way out of the venue. Personally I had a great time. There was great music, a good crowd and Lyfe Jennings…what else could I ask for? I also look forward to seeing more of what Infinite Growth will have to offer, because this event was a thumbs up for me.
